For the Casserole
  • 32 ounces Frozen Tater Tots
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground turkey or chicken
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce soy sauce is a valid substitute
  • 1 cup Frank's Red Hot Sauce or any favorite hot sauce
  • 2 medium Jalapeños optional, can substitute with bell peppers
  • 2 cups Shredded Mild Cheddar Cheese or sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack
  • 1 cup Sour Cream Greek yogurt is a healthier substitute
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin omit if not a fan
  • 1 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper adjust according to spice threshold
  • 2 tablespoons Butter olive oil is a healthier option
  • 8 ounces Sliced Mushrooms can substitute with zucchini
  • 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour cornstarch can work in gluten-free versions
  • 1 cup Half & Half milk or plant-based alternative works too
  • 2 cups Chicken Broth vegetable broth for vegetarian option
  • to taste Salt essential for flavor
  • to taste Black Pepper essential for flavor

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13" x 9" casserole dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat over medium-high and add ground beef. Cook for 7-8 minutes until browned. Drain excess grease, stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  3. Spread the cooked ground beef evenly across the bottom of the greased casserole dish.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and sauté for 5-7 minutes until tender. Transfer to a bowl to cool.
  5. Add flour to sautéed mushrooms, stirring well. Gradually whisk in half & half and chicken broth until thickened.
  6. Mix in sour cream, Frank's Red Hot Sauce, cumin, and cayenne pepper until blended. Pour this mixture over the beef in the casserole dish.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the creamy layer, add jalapeños if desired, and arrange frozen tater tots in a single layer on top.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until tater tots are golden-brown and crispy.
