Ingredients
  

For the Manicotti
  • 12 pieces Manicotti Shells Prepackaged saves time.
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Can substitute with lean turkey.
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage Ground turkey sausage can be used.
For the Sauce
  • 1 medium Onion Shallots can be used for a milder touch.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh is preferred.
  • 2 cups Marinara Sauce Any jarred or homemade variety.
For the Filling
  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese Cottage cheese can be used.
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese Divided.
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan Cheese Grated.
  • 1 large Egg Aquafaba can be a vegan substitute.
For Flavoring
  • 1 tablespoon Basil Fresh preferred.
  • 1 tablespoon Oregano Fresh preferred.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add manicotti shells and cook for 6-7 minutes until al dente. Drain and cool.
  3. In a skillet, heat and brown ground beef and Italian sausage with chopped onion for about 8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute. Pour in marinara sauce and simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta, 1 cup mozzarella, grated Parmesan, egg, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  6. Spread half the meat sauce in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Fill manicotti shells with ricotta mixture and place seam-side down in the dish. Top with remaining meat sauce.
  7. Sprinkle remaining mozzarella on top and cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes.
  8. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
